I want to blame it on being female. Or maybe I should blame it on being emotional. Maybe I should take out the word “blame” and replace it with “credit.” However I say it, it will never do it justice: Be as in Beauty dug straight to my heart and is one the best books I’ve read in years.
B as in Beauty dug straight to my heart and is one of the best books I’ve read in years.
It is a captivating story based on harsh realities and unfair stereotypes. It dances beautifully around taboo topics that are typically addressed quite crassly. Granted, this story is a bit too fairy-tale to make it completely believable, but it is no less conceivable.
B, the daughter of Cuban immigrants, is a New York City girl. She is modern, sophisticated and sassy, yet she still holds the morals her mother ingrained into her mind. She is completely torn in her beliefs yet seems to know exactly what she wants, just not how to get it. She’s typical and wonderfully relatable.
The struggles B has with her size in such a skinny city be- gin as a burden, but over time and after a rollercoaster ride of events, she realizes the true beauty she has always possessed. Her dead-end job and evil-bitch boss make the story all the more familiar and emotional, too.
In as few words as possible, this book can be described simply as this: captivating. B tells her story just how it is. She’s a straightforward, no-nonsense narrator that will take you on the adventure you’ve always fantasized about but would never attempt. She’s captivating.
Sure, the book is a bit extravagant (B seems a bit over-the-top at times), but audiences of both genders will fall in love with B and her road to self-discovery and total appreciation. I can’t just recommend this book to my girl friends; my guy friends are get- ting copies, too.
